In 2008, Chad Smith and Carol Ptak introduced a technology called Actively Synchronized Replenishment, ASR.
Now in 2011, this technology has been expanded and refined and has evolved to become Demand Driven MRP, or DDMRP.
To indicate the credibility this technology has attained, Chad and Carol were invited by McGraw-Hill to write the 3rd Edition of the classic book “Orlicky’s Material Requirements Planning,” which is to be published mid-summer 2011. This is still THE book on MRP. It has no equal.
In 2008, Chad and Carol co-authored a White Paper; today, it is still 100% accurate with 2 minor exceptions; first, the technology is now Demand Driven MRP; and second, the White Paper identifies 4 Elements of ASR, whereas one of those elements has been divided into two separate Elements for Demand Driven MRP. Otherwise this White Paper remains completely up to date, and is a worthwhile read.

“The effectiveness of any system has to be judged by the results that it can achieve. In today’s environment, companies that struggle with effective materials planning consistently see at least one or a combination of three main business effects:
- Unacceptable inventory performance (Too much of the wrong material, too little of the right material, high obsolescence and low inventory turns).
- Unacceptable service level performance (Low on time delivery, low fill rates, poor customer satisfaction, downward price pressure).
- High expedite related expenses and waste (Premium and additional freight charges, increasing overtime, penalties).
How is is that with today’s level of technology and connectivity that companies can struggle so mightily with with materials synchronization and these effects? After examining many companies locked in this struggle there appear to be 2 main reasons why the above effects happen in today’s manufacturing enterprises: “
